And breathe….

It’s been a long time since I last posted anything, mostly because I haven’t had time/couldn’t bear to spend any more time thinking about the renovation!

There was a period of a few weeks where it all became a bit too much and I couldn’t set foot in the place without noticing something (minor, but seemingly incredibly major) which inevitably made me burst into tears! There were no floors, missing walls, dust absolutely everywhere (including over all of our lovely furniture, which hadn’t been particularly well covered) and progress seemed to be ridiculously slow. Nick the builder then decided that was the ideal time to go on a 10 day holiday, meaning that things slowed down even further. Sockets and light switches were put in the wrong place which upset and annoyed me, and several our beautiful original floorboards were cut badly /snapped which absolutely broke my heart! Everything seemed to be getting worse and worse rather than getting better and it got to the point that I felt sick everytime I knew I had to go round to the house. The most frustrating thing was that whilst all of the hardcore building work, rewiring and plumbing was going on, there was very little that we ourselves could do, and so it began to feel like the place wasn’t actually ‘ours’ anymore.

But, thankfully, last weekend was a turning point. Nick is back from holiday and has really given the project a kick up the bum. Errors with sockets and switches have been resolved (well, for the most part anyway), all skimming has been completed, the beautiful bathroom tiles have been laid – after reinforcing the floor ahead of the 200kg cast iron bath being installed (!), the bath has somehow been carried upstairs to the bathroom, and the wall between the kitchen and bathroom has almost been put back. The tiling in the bathroom will take place this week and then the final bits will be installed, the kitchen will also be delivered this week which is extremely exciting. So hopefully, after this week we’ll actually have a functioning kitchen and bathroom (including a flushing toilet – whoop!).

The second fit for plumbing and electrics was due to take place this weekend, but typically that’s the one time that we’re away all weekend for a wedding, so we’ve had to push it back by a week, as we want to be there to check that everything goes where it should. This is actually a bit of a relief as it gives us some more time to pick the light fittings (sooo many options!) and order all the sockets, switches, radiators, cooker, fridge etc which we’d been holding off on doing until the place was less of a building site!

We’re now also FINALLY able to start the fun bit…picking colours! With a bit of gentle persuasion P agreed to my ideas of an indigo guest room and various shades of grey elsewhere, so we’ve ordered some F&B tester pots and I’m keeping everything crossed that he’ll still be happy with them when he sees them in the rooms themselves.

Now I’m just counting down the days until the builders are gone, so that I can try to get back a bit of love for the place that I’ve grown to hate!
